DJ Terry Francis’ Tech House Classics
To celebrate the releases of my book ‘Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey From Unknown DJ To Smalltime DJ’, UK DJ Terry Francis very kindly recorded this mix featuring a bunch of mid/late 90s tech house classics.
I first became aware of DJ Terry Francis in the mid-90s, the period of the birth of the London tech house sound. I was a clubber and DJ and recovering piano-house aficionado and the underground tech house parties and club nights provided a new rave home for me and my mates.
I mention in my book how Terry once bought a Roland MC303 Groovebox along to an after-party in Brighton and I always remember this as a key moment in my musical journey, as this machine really ignited my interest in music production. As I producer, I loved his late 90s productions with Housey Doingz and various other collabs including 2 Smoking Barrels, The Delinquents, The Scallywags etc. Also, his Architecture DJ Mix from 1998 was influential for me too, it’s a beautifully put-together mix that still sounds ace today.
I’ve heard Terry DJ loads of times over the years. One particular night at The Pressure Point in Brighton (RIP) I remember hearing him rinse out DJ Sneak’s ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud’ as part of one of those DJ sets that just stays with you. I shared a bill with him at the same venue on another evening too, courtesy of – as detailed in my book – former Brighton promoter and my house music partner-in-crime Fannah DuPont. Terry of course went on to international DJ success, landing a residency at fabric when it opened in 1999, a role he’s held down ever since.
In the 2000s I even got to play a set at Wiggle, the legendary London tech house party promoted by Terry with Nathan Coles and Eddie Richards. So he’s always kind of been there as a presence in my career, so we were very pleased when he agreed to do us a mix.
